The Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson, is one of the most authentic early presidential homes in America. The Hermitage not only boasts a rich and prosperous history that surrounds the house and tells stories of slavery, freedom, religion, the fortune of cotton, women’s suffrage and more, but it also shares the tale of how this 1000 acre farm transformed from a wealthy plantation and cotton farm to facing significant post Civil War collapse. Today, The Hermitage remains an integral component of Tennessee history which is funded solely through the aid and interest of visitors. Tours around the beautiful property include a peek into the Jackson family mansion, the formal garden, and a traditional style log cabin from 1804. This former plantation home was once occupied by more than 150 enslaved African Americans who maintained the beauty and wealth of the farm, cotton and animals. Guests have the opportunity to visit the slave quarters which are also on the property.
